Introduction

Service Learning Malaysia-University for Society (SULAM) is an innovative idea to bring higher education students towards society and help improve their life in every aspect. In the words of National Service Learning Clearinghouse, service learning is a strategy that integrates meaningful experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communitites. The Ministry of Education (MOE) Malaysia has included service learning as one of the requirement for university students to undergo before they pass out as full-fledged graduates.

"Service-learning is a form of experiantial education where learning occurs through a cycle of action and reflection as students work with others through a process of applying what they are learning to community problems, an at the same time, reflecting upon their existence as they seek to achieve real objectives for the community and deeper understanding for themselves." Eyler and Giles, (1999).
